The Samsung SP-R4232 plasma television is a 42-inch model and the resolution is 852 X 480 EDTV. The model includes remote, 30 watt built-in speakers, a table top stand and it also has an integrated NTSC and ATSC HDTV tuner. The model is encased in a silver frame and has a sleek black trim thinly framing the screen. With the stand in place it is around 42” in width and about 13” in depth. It weighs about 88 pounds and it stands almost 31 inches tall.

There is only one button that is viewable from the front of this model. That button is the power button. This button is right in the center of the lower portion of the frame and it casts a blue glow if the television is on stand-by; it also flickers when it gets a signal from the remote.

The Picture…

The picture quality on the Samsung SP-R4232 is not as great as the resolution suggests and artifacts often distract from any higher speed or heavy-action scenes that several DVD movies in this day and age often have. It just cannot keep up.

The color is very untrue although it can be adapted by the user by going to “movie setting” and scaling down to create a truer view of color. Each of the colors can be individually altered. It also includes an option called DNIe. This option allows the user to check out a split-screen to see the difference in performance when the DNIe is used. I don’t think that it is really any better than another company’s color-processing but it still exists as a featured option.

The bright and dark scenes both displayed very well. However, Samsung claims that the product’s contrast ratio is 10,000:1. I do not believe that this is actually true but I could be mistaken since these ratios are measured in several ways using several different formulas. As for the glare reduction technology – it was great!

What else?

The Samsung SP-R4232 houses a phenomenal menu and, although the menu is admittedly quite fantastic, it does have a few annoying icons that could be easily done without. One of the best features of the menu is the fact that it is so easy to navigate through. It is very easy to read – even from afar and the transparency can be controlled on top of the picture. To prevent image retention, the onscreen image moves a very little bit about every two to three seconds. A PIP (picture in picture) option is also featured in this model.

The remote is unusual to say the least but it functions alright. This model also comes equipped with several inputs. This model allows you to plug in your whole collection of digital equipment. A cable card and an ATSC tuner are even built into the model!

The sound quality is pretty decent with 4 speakers (each receiving 15 watts). An equalizer exists in the menu so the user can adjust the frequencies or select from four preset options.

The Value…

In popular stores you can expect to see this particular model selling for about $2999.00 but most internet prices will be a few hundred less than that. Overall, I believe that the Samsung SP-R4232 has found a place somewhere cozy even at the middle of the rest of the current offerings.
