What you get…
The LG 50PC5D is a nice sized 50-inch plasma screen television. The exterior is nearly all glossy black aside from a very thin strip of silver that runs below the frame. It measures almost 50 inches high X almost 40 inches wide X 14.5 inches in depth. It weighs in at 86.6 pounds with the stand attached. The panel alone measures 48.9” in height X 32.6” in width X 3.5” in depth and weighs a little over 76 pounds. It comes with attached speakers, black pedestal stand, and remote.
The Basics…
The LG 50PC5D plasma offers nice deep black levels and, even though the design is not so innovative, it does look quite nice. The speaker area is at an angle on the bottom and the stand is a little bit bigger in width than what I’m used to seeing but overall I think I kind of like the look of this model.
The menu is just as sleek as the LG 50PC5D’s exterior and it is conveyed by use of a semitransparent box that lies over the picture. The menu’s options are easily accessible even though the navigation bar didn’t leave the screen while I tweaked the picture.
The LG 50PC5D’s remote left a bit more to be desired. The only feature that I liked about the remote was that it could control up to four other home theatre products. This makes it mediocre since many of the newer plasmas come equipped with remotes that can control up to seven other pieces. This remote also had some confusing buttons on it that made me feel like I was not quite as intelligent as I think I am. For instance, the remote’s secondary brightness control – why do I need this? Doesn’t the menu already cover this option? (And, yes, it does.) My head is still pounding…
The View…
The amazing levels of black offer the viewer a great picture for those darker scenes and the picture performed quite well compared to several other models of bit higher level. The LG 50PC5D did disappoint me when I found out that I could not get into the menu to tweak the color temperature. I would have really liked that to have been an option.
The accuracy of color was not all that far off; the only color that became a bit annoying was what should have been primary green but was instead a yellowish green. The shadow details were also a tad behind some of the other models but the overall performance was pretty good. I think that the LG 50PC5D held up quite well against the competitors.

What Else???
The LG 50PC5D does need some improvement for noise reduction. I was very disappointed with that area. The feed was very audible and even with the “XD Noise” option I still heard that feed, although it was much quieter.
It couldn’t de-interlace any of the film based content properly and it also did not perform well with video based content even though these were both quite difficult to see. The one good thing is that the model did do well when I hooked it up at 480i with component video. The LG was able to smooth those jagged edges and the plasma was able to engage a 2:3 pulldown when the “Cinema 3:2 mode” was engaged.
Bang for Your Buck…
I think for the price, $1345.00 - $1599.00, you could probably do much worse. The black levels do perform quite nicely and aside from the below average sound quality and excess noise the set isn’t all that bad.
