The Pioneer PDP -5080HD is a 50-inch plasma that offers fantastically deep black level performance. This makes it much easier for the consumer to actually view the darker scenes without having to strain the eyes to do so; it also really makes the overall view of the colors much more vivid and realistic.

The easy transitioning used in the video-processing mode is a nice touch as well as the antireflective screen that actually works very well in keeping the glare on the screen to a minimum. In this particular model a non-matte screen is used. The menu of the Pioneer PDP-5080HD is relatively easy to use and, if you alter the picture, it even offers a “before and after” mode so the user may view the screen to see the difference after making a picture selection.

The sleek, modern design and accompanying stand and speaker box really make this a great addition to any home theatre system. The panel weighs in at roughly 88 pounds with the stand and speakers attached and the measurements are around 48.2”W X 31.8”H X 9.3”D. The panel weighs around 77 pounds after the removal of the stand and speakers and the measurements are then around 48.2”W X 28.2”H X 4.5”D respectively.

The native resolution on the Pioneer PDP-5080HD is 1366 X 768 pixels and all sources are, of course, scaled to it. This panel also comes equipped with a few advance picture affecting options which are pretty cool but two of the most effective features that I found useful were the “orbiter” and the “video pattern”. Both of these features help to cut down or eliminate image retention. The first solution offers shifting of the whole image a tiny bit at a time to aid in the prevention of image retention. The second offers the solution of a large white bar that will run over the screen for an hour and then shut off the television automatically when it has finished; which should remove any retention that has occurred. The energy saver mode is also a nice touch. The two separate energy saving modes can limit the panel’s brightness to conserve energy.

There are very few negative aspects about the Pioneer PDP-5080HD that affect the overall performance of this well designed plasma but they do exist. I will begin with the minor faults.

A few of the links were missing from the picture-affecting selection which really did not pose a large problem. Also, the Optimum adjusting selection does not work properly since it does not possess any of the advanced options for picture adjustment. The fact that you cannot fine-tune the color through the sets user menu bothers me. Less costly sets offer this feature but this highly priced one does not. Also the primary color of green does not view accurately and looks more sickly green that vibrant green. The largest negative aspect of the Pioneer is its price. The PDP-5080HD has a pricier tag than many other sets within this range but, if you can afford to drop that kind of cash, it will deliver an excellent home theatre experience.
