LG 50PC5D

What you get…

The LG 50PC5D is a nice sized 50-inch plasma screen television. The exterior is nearly all glossy black aside from a very thin strip of silver that runs below the frame. It measures almost 50 inches high X almost 40 inches wide X 14.5 inches in depth. It weighs in at 86.6 pounds with the stand attached. The panel alone measures 48.9” in height X 32.6” in width X 3.5” in depth and weighs a little over 76 pounds. It comes with attached speakers, black pedestal stand, and remote.

The Basics…

The LG 50PC5D plasma offers nice deep black levels and, even though the design is not so innovative, it does look quite nice. The speaker area is at an angle on the bottom and the stand is a little bit bigger in width than what I’m used to seeing but overall I think I kind of like the look of this model.

The menu is just as sleek as the LG 50PC5D’s exterior and it is conveyed by use of a semitransparent box that lies over the picture. The menu’s options are easily accessible even though the navigation bar didn’t leave the screen while I tweaked the picture.

Panasonic TH-42PD50UWhat You Get…

The Panasonic TH-42PD50U plasma offers a 42-inch screen display in EDTV and has a widescreen format ratio of 16:9. The resolution is 853 X 480 in EDTV. It comes complete with built-in bottom mounted speakers that are NOT detachable, a built in NTSC and ATSC model tuner, remote, and a stand. It is completely silver except for the viewing area, of course, and it measures around 30.5” tall with the stand. It is 42” in width and the body is about 4” in depth.

The Basics…

The TH-42PD50U is the replacement for the discontinued TH-42PD25U which was last year’s best seller and I believe its going to live up to those same expectations. The model contains the plasma panel that Panasonic is famous for. This panel has a good long life, almost never has any image retention, and offers much better brightness.

What You Get…

The Vizio P42HD is a 42-inch plasma television. It comes complete with tabletop stand, detachable speakers, an integrated NTSC as well as ATSC tuner and remote. The resolution is 1,024 X 768 and its wattage consumption is around 440 watts. The measurements for this model with the stand attached are: 27.25” in height X 10.75” in depth X 48.5” in width and with the speakers and stand attached it weighs about 85 pounds.

The Basics…

The Vizio P42HD is probably one of the cheapest plasmas on the market today. The model is housed in a plain but shiny dark graphite frame. It reflects a lot of light from other indoor sources and I was annoyed by it. The highly optioned low cost plasma does not live up to its specifications since the company chose not to put in a glare reduction screen. There really was not all that much that impressed me about this particular plasma. Read more »

It weighs about 88 pounds and it stands almost 31 inches tall.

There is only one button that is viewable from the front of this model. That button is the power button. This button is right in the center of the lower portion of the frame and it casts a blue glow if the television is on stand-by; it also flickers when it gets a signal from the remote. Read more »

The Pioneer PDP-5080HD

The Pioneer PDP -5080HD is a 50-inch plasma that offers fantastically deep black level performance. This makes it much easier for the consumer to actually view the darker scenes without having to strain the eyes to do so; it also really makes the overall view of the colors much more vivid and realistic.

The easy transitioning used in the video-processing mode is a nice touch as well as the antireflective screen that actually works very well in keeping the glare on the screen to a minimum. In this particular model a non-matte screen is used. The menu of the Pioneer PDP-5080HD is relatively easy to use and, if you alter the picture, it even offers a “before and after” mode so the user may view the screen to see the difference after making a picture selection.
